Joan Rivers: on life support + social media backlash

The prognosis for Joan Rivers is not looking good.

According to celeb site TMZ, Joan is on life support, and sources close to the US comedian tell TMZ she is completely reliant on machines to stay alive.

According to TMZ sources, the family will have to decide in the next couple of days whether to keep the 81-year-old on life support. TMZ has been told the family remains hopeful that if they do decide to turn off the machines, she will make a turn for the better and fight through it.

As TMZ first reported, Joan was rushed to the hospital after she stopped breathing during throat surgery on Thursday.

In a kind of backlash I have never seen before directed at a celebrity who clearly polarises so much, social media posts on Joan's current medical condition have been filled equally with messages of support for Joan as well as vitriol, after Joan made comments recently about the Palestine, saying she had zero sympathy for Palestinian civilians killed in the Gaza conflict because they had fair warning to get out, and didn't… so they deserve to die.

Joan was filmed at LAX when she delivered her now famous rant about Israel defending itself... by screaming she doesn't want to hear about civilian casualties.

A sample of her rage: "They started it. We now don't count who's dead. You're dead, you deserve to be dead."

It was later updated with this statement from Joan where she said she was "totally taken out of context. What I said and stand behind is, war is hell and unfortunately civilians are victims of political conflicts. We, the United States, certainly know this as 69 years later we still feel the guilt of Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

She adds, "Along with every other sane person in this world, I am praying for peace."

Right now, with Joan on life support, this kind of talk should be left to rest for now. Social media obviously disagrees. Thoughts?
